Framed Earrings With Pearl Toppers - Class Description

Examples of the unique jewelry that can be made with these skills.

In this class you will learn how to create frames around sterling silver rectangular earrings. Framing adds a finished appearance to sheet metal. While we will make rectangular earrings in the class, the skill is transferrable to other types of jewelry such as pendants, bracelets, and rings. You will also learn to create the earring topper with a pearl and bezel. And if that is not enough, you will learn to solder tiny jump rings to a large piece of metal. You will be provided with a kit that includes the pearls, bezel and 4 jump rings.

Please note: This is not a great class to use alternative metals such as copper or brass unless you can find 2x1 mm rectangular wire in a matching metal. Cutting your own 2x1 mm may be more difficult to work with than purchased wire. Also take into consideration that the bezel and jump rings provided you will be in sterling silver.

Pre-requisites: You should have basic fabrication skills. You should have decent and soldering skills  - what does this mean? You are fairly comfortable with making basic solder joints, have some control over the flame, and you have more experience than taking just a few classes that involve soldering.

What to bring to class:

  • Sterling silver 2x1 mm rectangular wire (Rio 100525). Note: How much rectangular wire to get? You can sketch your earring and measure the perimeter to get an idea of how much you will need (remember, you have 2 of them!). Get extra, just in case...
  • 6 inches of 20 guage round sterling silver wire
  • Earring backs (only) for standard 20 g wire posts
  • 22 g sterling silver sheet metal.
  • Hard, medium and easy solder.
  • Ultra-fine Sharpie with your name on it

Required Kit: $24.00 - Included in price of class. Kit contains the following:

  • 4 jump rings
  • 2 each 8-8.5mm, grade A white pearls
  • Tubing/bezel for pearl

PLEASE WEAR CLOSE TOED SHOES TO CLASS; IF YOU HAVE LONG HAIR, PLEASE BRING CLIPS TO TIE YOUR HAIR BACK.
