Antique and Polish

Contrast and depth are created by oxidizing or antiquing the silver. This process gives jewelry an old world look. The piece is dipped into a hot solution of liver of sulfur. Smelly, but very effective.

Placing the yellow pea sized chunk of liver of sulfur in a cup and a half of hot water creates the solution for antiquing silver. Use an old bowl that you reserve only for antiquing. Pro-Craft Liver of Sulfur recommends wearing protective eyewear, gloves and a respirator when handling the product. It is a good idea to read the MSDS for this and any chemical you use. Dip your jewelry into the solution until the silver turns a steel gray. Varying effects can be achieved by dipping the jewelry less time. Rinse your jewelry with clean water. After the jewelry dries, the silver is cleaned with .04 steel wool, then polished with a Sunshine Cloth seen below.

Caution: Most beads are not affected by the liver of sulfur solution. I have found the finish on horn and polymer clay beads is dulled by the antiquing solution. How do you remedy this situation? Antique the parts prior to assemblage. Yes, what a pain......

Storing a piece of jewelry in an airtight plastic bag reduces further oxidation and allows the piece to remain shiny for quite a while. The luster can always be brought back with a once-over with the Sunshine Cloth. The polishing cloth can be used until it is almost black and should be stored in a plastic bag to retain its moisture.
